Dennis Oppenheim è nato ad Electric City nel 1938. Dopo gli studi al California College of Arts and Crafts e alla Stanford University, si trasferisce a New York negli anni 60. Nella capitale americana dellarte contemporanea, si inserisce nellemergente scena della land art e della performance, abbandonando la produzione di oggetti artistici per dedicarsi alla realizzazione di progetti di vasta scala, incentrati sullintervento diretto sullambiente e sul paesaggio. Una delle prima opere del genere è Annual Rings, unintervento sulle rive del fiume St. John alla frontiera tra Stati Uniti e Canada, sulle cui sponde disegna cerchi concentrici scavati nella neve. Il suo lavoro assume dunque una valenza politica, in linea con il clima sessantottesco. In quegli anni produce diverse opere allaperto, lavori chiave della prima stagione della Land Art, contribuendo a rinnovare il linguaggio artistico del suo tempo. Parallelamente gli interventi diretti sul paesaggio assumono la forma di performance dal forte coinvolgimento fisico, azioni che sfidano i limiti e le possibilità del corpo umano. A partire dagli anni 80 invece inizia a realizzare installazioni monumentali in spazi aperti, alcune effimere, di cui resta documentazione fotografica e i progettuale, altre permanenti. Dennis Oppenheim è uno degli artisti più importanti del secolo scorso, noto per i significativi contributi nel campo dellarte concettuale, della Land Art e della performance. Ha esposto nelle più importanti istituzioni darte del mondo, tra cui la Biennale di Venezia, il MOMA di New York e il Centre Pompidou di Parigi. English version Dennis Oppenheim was born in Electric City in 1938. After his studies at the California College of Arts and Crafts and at the Stanford University, he moved to New York in the 60s. In the American capital of contemporary art he took part in the emerging Land Art and Performance Art scene, giving up on objects production and dedicating himself to large scale projects, based in the direct intervention on landscapes and environments. One of the first artworks of this kind is Annual Rings, an intervention on the shores of St. John river, on the border between United States of America and Canada, where he drew concentric circles on both sides by digging on the snow. His works tend to gain political meaning, in harmony with the climate of protest of the late 60s and early 70s. In these years he made many earth works on open environment, which are key works of the first period of the Land Art, thus contributing to innovate the art scene of his time. Meanwhile, his direct interventions on landscapes took the form of performances of great physical involvement and actions that challenge the limits and possibilities of the human body. Starting from the 80s, he began to make huge installations in open spaces. Some of them were permanent and others were ephemeral (of which important documentation, such as projects and photographies, was made). Dennis Oppenheim is one of the most important artists of the last Century, notorious for his fundamental contributions in the field of Conceptualism, Land Art and Performance Art. He exhibited in some of the most important cultural institutions of the world, such as Venice Biennale, the MOMA and the Centre Pompidou.
